This time of year brings lots of fun for those who enjoy fishing. The months of February and March are great months to catch monster Black Bass, loads of White Bass and my personal favorite, the delicious crappie. The water is starting to warm up and the fish are biting!
A few weeks ago there was a 10 lb. and a 12 lb. Largemouth Bass caught in our lake. The news of this gives me the itch to go bass fishing, but I’ve decided that I’d rather try to put some crappie in our freezer since they only bite really well for a limited time. Last Saturday, we were able to snag 8 good size keepers and they tasted just as good as I remember from last year. We caught ours using minnows and I’ve heard they are biting jigs as well.
Our friends report that White Bass are excellent on small spinner baits and small rattle traps. The fellows that caught those big bass I mentioned earlier said that they were throwing red or orange spinner baits and crank baits and fishing in 6 to 8 feet of water. I’ve heard that pumpkinseed soft plastic worms and lizards are snagging a few big ones as well. And the catfish are always biting on punch bait in both shallow and deep water.
Don’t let the low levels of our lake scare you off from taking a trip down here to do some fishing. There is still a lot of water to fish and a lot of big fish waiting to be caught! I’ll keep my ears open for all the latest fishing reports from the locals and will try to pass that along to you if you inquire. See you at the lake!
