Fishing is one of the activities that my husband and I enjoy doing together as often as we can. One of the reasons we moved to this area was to enjoy all that Choke Canyon Reservoir had to offer. We love the challenge of catching Largemouth Bass, the great taste of fresh crappie and catfish, and the excitement of White Bass when they school. Living within a 5 minute drive from a boat ramp makes it especially tempting to load up and head out almost on a daily basis.
Besides fishing, I really didn’t think this place had that much more to offer. Much to my surprise, I have come to thoroughly enjoy observing all the wildlife in our Choke Canyon State Park and surrounding area. There are White-tail Deer, Axis Deer, Javelina, Wild Turkey and even alligators, just to mention a few!
Oh and I forgot to mention the birds! Little did I know that this is the place to be if you love birding. My daughter is a wildlife biologist and when she visits she almost always makes a trip to our State Park to do some hiking on the nature trails to see what birds and wildlife she can observe. The spring migration brings flycatchers, warblers, vireos and orioles. If you’re lucky, you may even get a good look at a Great Kiskadee. The wintering months bring another group of birds including sparrows and hawks galore. This is just a short list of the ones I can remember. If you enjoy wading and shorebirds, you’ll get your fill of those as well.
So, if you are looking for something to do besides fishing while visiting our beautiful South Texas area, you may want to take a trip to visit the Choke Canyon State Park and see what interesting creatures are just roaming and flying around for your enjoyment. Be sure to stop at the park’s Ranger Station and check out the information they have available for you to completely enjoy the park. See you there!
